A lot’s been happening since the last entry. Chemikal Underground is putting together a poetry album right now (brainchild of Idlewild’s Roddy Woomble) that marries loads of contemporary Scottish artists with newly commissioned Scottish poetry. It’s a great idea and one that is guaranteed to sound fantastic given the range of artists performing. The list includes Teenage Fanclub, Vashti Bunyan, James Yorkston, Malcolm Middleton, Alun Woodward, Aereogramme, Trash Can Sinatras… the list goes on. King Creosote is currently in the studio (I can hear the song through the wall as I type) recording his track and The Incredible String Band are in later this week. I hope to do a track myself (poem by Louise Welsh) later this week.
King Creosote also happened to play the Homefires Festival a week ago in London. I was down there playing the Sunday night – thanks to all those who came along – and it was a great, if technical gremlin filled night.
Just as Jamie and I were about to launch into ‘New Land’ at the start of our set, we realised the sustain pedal on the electric piano wasn’t working and had to stop. Five minutes of panic and almost pulling out the old upright piano from backstage followed but thankfully the God of all things Electronic took pity on us and the pedal regained it senses and we could carry on. It was only the first gig of the year so I was suitably nervous but I think it went not too bad and I’m really looking forward to playing again this Sunday at the Chemikal Underground DeRosa album launch at Mono in Glasgow. It will be a short affair but a good night I’m sure.
To get back to the poetry album for a bit… I ended up singing on the Trash Can Sinatras’ song, which for me was a real honour as I’ve been a fan of the band since ‘I’ve Seen Everything’ and they were one of the reasons I got into music so much I decided I wanted to play myself. It was brilliant to spend a few hours with the band and be part of the whole thing.
My album has finally been taken out of my hands and has been sent over to New York to be mixed by Victor. I had a long chat with him last Friday and he’s suggested we get another couple of guitarists involved on the record to see what they might come up with. He’s been talking about getting in Sean Eden of Luna to play some guitar and they’re hopefully already doing that. I should be getting some mp3s of what’s been getting done over the next day or so. It’s a pretty weird feeling knowing that my record’s getting worked on in my absence but as I fly over there later this month I’m sure I’ll get my chance to throw in my tuppenceworth soon enough. It’ll be pretty exciting to hear what Sean’s come up. I’ve been a big fan of Luna for years but have never met him.
Right, I’m off to rehearse for this poetry record. Wherever you are, I hope the weather’s as good for you as it’s been here over the past few days.
F**k the World Cup. I’m off to the park. Emma |
