Diary Entry - 12th March 2007

Austin up next... Jamie and I leave New York tomorrow for Austin, via Chicago which of course leaves the possibility yet again of losing our guitars. And then Paul and Graeme are joining us from Glasgow so we can play as a full band during SXSW.

I've had a couple of days off since the shows on Thursday and Saturday and have been playing the tourist. I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan today. I experienced my very first vertigo sensation as I focussed too much on the wooden slats and realised quite how little was keeping me from falling into the river below. Still, highly recommended.

The gigs in NYC were great. Mo Pitkin's in Manhattan was great, really relaxed and quite peculiar as everyone was seated and it almost felt like a lounge bar. An old friend of mine from university came up after the show which was a huge surprise as I hadn't seen him in years. Turns out he was over from London for the weekend and had spotted me in Time Out and decided to come to the show. It was a lovely surprise, but kind of freaked me out as I realised he'd been watching the whole show before I realised he was there. Funny when previous lives catch up with you...

The Union Hall show was also great. Jena Malone was playing before me which was very exciting. She was lovely, came up and introduced herself and we chatted for a bit. She has a new band called Jena Malone and the Bloodstains. Good name. Wish I'd thought of it. They were pretty good. Jena uses an octaver to drop her voice to scary pitches for one of the songs. Heard it in the soundcheck and almost died it sounded so much like something out The Exorcist.
